Nigeria Unveils Digital Services Directory, Leading Africa’s Tech Revolution

Nigeria has unveiled its digital services directory, showcasing its youth-driven, tech-powered economy as a leader in advancing Africa’s digital trade agenda. The unveiling took place on the sidelines of the inaugural African Continental Free Trade Area Digital Trade Forum in Lusaka, Zambia, making it Africa’s first-ever digital services directory.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in Nigeria, under the leadership of Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, presented initial findings from the country’s national Digital Trade Survey and Mapping Exercise. This initiative was supported by the United Nations Development Programme Regional AfCFTA Portfolio, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to digital transformation.

Oduwole emphasized the significance of the mapping effort, stating that it positions Nigeria at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution. The survey revealed that 41% of Nigeria’s digital entrepreneurs are under 35 years old, with more than half of the firms founded within the last three years, indicating a youthful drive in the digital economy.

While men currently lead the majority of digital firms, the report highlights the increasing presence of women in leadership roles, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and education technology. This shift underscores a growing trend towards gender diversity in Nigeria’s digital landscape.

The survey also shed light on Nigeria’s strengths in Computing and Infrastructure Services, Professional Services, and Financial Technology, with a notable focus on digital payments. Over 90% of digital services firms are based in Nigeria, showcasing strong local ownership despite international investment and collaboration.

Furthermore, the report identified the Ghana–Kenya–South Africa corridor as a key destination for Nigerian firms expanding into Africa, with Rwanda and Egypt also attracting significant interest. The data revealed that 75% of surveyed firms are registered companies, indicating a formalized business environment conducive to cross-border growth.

As Co-Champion of Digital Trade under the AfCFTA, Nigeria has pledged to translate the survey findings into targeted programs aimed at facilitating market access and regulatory support for Nigerian firms looking to expand across Africa. Additionally, there will be focused initiatives to support women-led digital enterprises across various sectors.

Oduwole reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to building an inclusive and globally competitive digital economy under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. The country’s ambition is to leverage these insights to drive strategic initiatives that will propel Nigeria further as a digital powerhouse in Africa.

As Nigeria continues to spearhead digital innovation on the continent, the unveiling of the digital services directory marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards harnessing the full potential of its digital economy and fostering sustainable growth in the digital landscape.
